Autobiography Definition: The Art of Self-Documenting One’s Life Journey

Definition: An autobiography is a self-written account of the life of oneself. It is a narrative genre in which an individual recounts their own life experiences and significant events in their life journey. Autobiographies are often distinguished by their intimate perspective and detailed personal insights.

Etymology and Origin: The term ‘autobiography’ comes from three Greek words: ‘autos’, meaning ‘self’, ‘bios’, meaning ‘life’, and ‘graphein’, meaning ‘to write’. Therefore, it translates literally to ‘self-life-write’. The use of the term in English dates back to the early 19th century, although the practice of writing one’s own life story has been undertaken in various forms since ancient times.
