Passionate originates from Greek word Πάθος (Páthos) but before explain the original meaning I will quote the definition of word passionate from Cambridge Dictionary.
Passionate: having very strong feelings or emotions
Cambridge Dictionary
The Greek word πάθος has double meaning. It originates from verb πάσχω (I suffer) so it means something that makes you suffer but also something you want so much. It has hidden meaning in the second definition that you suffer because you want it. It is not clear but probably the 2nd meaning came from Stoics that believed that desire is the mother of the suffering.
So passionate is someone who has very strong feelings or emotions in such manner that he will suffer because of them.
