In every book about photography the definition and origin of the word photography is described.
They analyse that the art is based on light and it is the meaning of the word photography.
Light in Greek is fos (Φώς) and γραφή (graphy) is writing. So it is like you sketching with light.
Of course the word was invented so wasn’t first in Greek but they chose to use the Greek origin words as many other scientists. It is not clear who used it first but usually it is attributed to John Herschel
