Two indicative front pages from today’s newspapers, which accused me of being a liar, a sycophant, and these are daily front pages
Kyriakos Mitsotakis
In Greek the word Sycophant (συκοφάντης) is a liar that accuses people with false accusations. The English meaning is a self-seeking flatterer.
So we can understand why Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis used the word sycophant in his speech. It is easily to be confused with Greek words that have different meaning in English.
The Greek word συκοφάντης (sycophantis) etymology is syco = fig (σύκο) phant – φάντης (someone that uncovers, reveals)
The Greek word origin is not clear but even if they are many stories about the word the most logical is that the word came from from people that accused others that they stole figs from the sacred figs. Serious accusations but difficult to prove so it was equally possible to be false accusation just to defame someone.
