Physiology is the scientific study of the functions and mechanisms which work within a living system. As a sub-discipline of biology, it focuses on how organisms, organ systems, individual organs, cells, and biomolecules carry out the chemical and physical functions in a living system.

The word “physiology” comes from the Ancient Greek φύσις (physis), meaning “nature, origin”, and -λογία (-logia), meaning “study of”. The term was first used in the 16th century to describe the study of the functions of living organisms.
