Pseudocode

The use of word pseudocode in computer science. Let’s check first what it means:

In computer science, pseudocode is a plain language description of the steps in an algorithm or another system. Pseudocode often uses structural conventions of a normal programming language, but is intended for human reading rather than machine reading. It typically omits details that are essential for machine understanding of the algorithm, such as variable declarations and language-specific code.

Pseudo

The Greek word for a lie is ψέμα pséma or most official word (and the ancient one) ψεύδος (psévdos). So something that is not real. So the code that is not real is pseudocode.

Code

Code in Greek is the word κώδικας (códikas) that has several meanings in Greek.

  • password
  • legal code (eg criminal law)
  • book based on document collections
  • a communication code (like Morse Code)

But probably the word code in Greek comes from the latin word Codex and it is not Greek even if it looks like it.
