Greek word for poet is ποιητής (poietis) and for poetry is ποίηση (poiesi). But what is the meaning of these words? The word ποιητής originates from verb ποιώ (poio means create) so the Greek word for poet means the same time and creator.
The use of creator is more rare but still in modern times we use it when we want to speak about a creation close to perfection (in Christmas song there is the phrase ποιητής των όλων which translates poet of everything ).
So poet was someone who was creating art.
