Definition and etymology of onomatopoeia

Onomatopoia would translate from Greek as “creating names”. The definition in English is

he naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (such as buzz, hiss)

onomatopoeia by Meriam – Webster

So naming something by their sound like cuckoo or bees is onomatopoeia.
We said that translates “creating names” because of the word onoma (όνομα means name) and poeia (-ποεία means creation) from the verb ποιώ (poio means create).
